I work for the Triple Trust Organisation, an enterprise development NGO in South Africa that specialises in skills and business training for = people running micro/small-level businesses. Our sister company, the Institute for Development Services (IDS), sells enterprise development training = materials (we developed the BEST game used by the ILO and GTZ), does = capacity building for NGOs and does consulting and project management = work for enterprise development-related projects. =20
We're doing a literature review for a local urban upgrading project in = an informal settlement area in Cape Town. Our basic goal is to find and = learn from other cities or examples or people upgrading infrastructure = and housing in informal settlements, without the people moving out, = using a people-centred approach and creating sustainable economic = opportunities through the process. The role players involved in the = project are a strong local community organisation, a local university = civil engineering department, local government (funding infrastructure = and housing development with the community providing most of the = labour), local NGOs and some corporate partners. =20 =20 Do you know any other key people or organisations working in or writing = on the combined areas of: * upgrading urban informal settlements * in situ upgrading - people don't move out of the area * providing labour intensive job creation opportunities through infrastructure and housing development * people-centred approaches to informal settlement development (strong community organisation and involvement) * developing broader, sustainable economic opportunities in informal settlements.
I'm particularly interested in contacts in Latin America or India, if = you know people or organisations. Also, are there any particular = journals you recommend that we scan?
Thanks for considering this request. Please respond to me off the list = at either of the e-mail addresses listed below. =20
