Czech language classes will concentrate on basic conversation- al Czech. Lessons will be aimed at practical training based on materials prepared for such purpose. Grammar will be limited to a minimum requirement. In addition, Czech culture will be discussed in the context of history.

The works of outstanding writers, musicians and painters of international importance will be reviewed. Sightseeing will be included to enable participants to see valuable pieces of art and architecture.

2. Selected Problems of the Transition in the Czech Economy and the Economic Geography of the Czech Republic

The course will have two parts: the first will focus on the regional geography of the Czech Republic. Its inhabitants structure and mobility, settlements, agriculture and industry, regions and regional structure.

The second part will review regional aspects of economic and social transition after l989. The review will include geo-political changes, restitutions, privatization, entrepreneurship, changes of employment related to individual sectors of economy, the development of unemployment, election preferences etc.

3. Czech Economic Transition

The course will discuss the general characteristics of former centrally planned economies in the process of transformation to a market economy. Policies such as price liberaliza- tion, privatization and structural modifications will be studied through examples from the Czech Republic's current experience. Current issues such as the Czech crown's convertibility, foreign currency flows and their impact on the Czech Republic's economy will be also covered.

4. Czech Trade

This course aims at acquainting with the problems of busi- ness in the Czech Republic. This conception suggests the course will be aimed at practical tasks. The content of the course will include the transformation of the Czech trade after 1989 and the trade structure in the Czech Republic. Another range will concern legislation arrangements related to various forms of business on the territory of the Czech Republic; various possibilities of foreign capital penetra- tion into the Czech Republic; taxes. An inseparable part of this field is consumer protection, certain specific consumer oriented practices and the possibilities of sales promotion. The last major block of lectures will deal with interna- tional trade issues facing Czech business, such as customs, export promotion regulations, import limitation etc.

5. Social Policy and the Labour Market Policy

The course will provide an overview of the consequences of the social and economic changes in the Czech Republic. Problems of labour market development, social differentiation, poverty etc. The course will also describe the features of social policy, such as labour market policy, social security, social safety, and other issues.

6. Public Sector Transition Bases

The subject will deal with the changing role of the government as an economic agent in the Czech economy. Major changes in the public sector will be described in two blocks. The principles and priorities of fiscal policy will be presented here as well as the strategy of local financial reform, fiscal system relations and the details of the Czech reformed tax system. The second block of lectures will review transformation of some "traditional" public sector branches, i.e. principles of the health care reform, system of education, etc. ----------------------------------------------------------------- For program details and application forms, please contact:
