The Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management, is announcing its first Preceonference Luncheon for Endowed Positions, to be held in Vancouver, BC on Saturday, August 5, 1995, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The luncheon is for: (1) individuals who hold endowed professorships or endowed chairs in entrepreneurship, small business, free enterprise or related fields, (2) endowed position holders in other fields who share an interest in entrepreneurship, (3) faculty and/or deans involved in developing endowed positions in entrepreneurship and related fields.
AGENDA: The luncheon will have three components. Bob Tosterud, who holds the chair at the University of South Dakota will talk about how chairs can influence the public policy process. He's wonderfully qualified to do this, having served as the staff director of the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress for 7 years, then serving as a program director for the Ford Foundation involved in economic development, before taking the chair. Once in the chair, he convinced the South Dakota State Assembly to pass the "Graduate Entrepreneurial Loan Program" which provides state guaranteed low-interest loans to start-ups developed from qualifying business plans crafted by students in South Dakota's universities. As a relative newcomer to his chair, he has a world of different insights and contacts that I think you will find invigorating and useful.
The second component will depend in part on the endowed chairs themselves. As the field's informal tracker of infrastructure, I will be giving a report on the current "state of the field." For example do you know there are now over 25 refereed, English-language journals whose primary focus is entrepreneurship? Do you know there are 160 endowed positions in entrepreneurship and related fields? Enclosed is a brief questionnaire to update my files on endowed positions. The last full survey was over 2 years ago, and the potential for changes is enourmous, so please take a moment and fill out the survey regardless of whether you'll be attending the luncheon or not!! The results of the prior survey prompted nearly a dozen articles on endowed positions in the national media, such as the Wall Street Journal. I would greatly appreciate endowed position holders updating their records.
The third component is a chance to meet with other endowed position holders. The Academy meeting always attracts a large and diverse crowd, and the Vancouver venue is sure to bring out one of the largest turnouts in the history of the Academy.
REGISTRATION: The luncheon costs $30.00 and preregistration is necessary. The registration form is included below.
QUESTIONS: If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the organizer, Jerome (Jerry) Katz. During the summer he can be reached at (314)275-8721, or faxed at (314)275-7513. His email is mailto:KATZJA@SLUVCA.SLU.EDU .
