Jim Harold, a USAID contractor, has been kind enough to pass on the following information on accessing Canada's IDRC materials via Internet (gopher or WWW). Unfortunately, neither Jim nor I are able to expand beyond what we are sending, but I can hardly wait to try it out myself.

What is INDIX?
The International Network for Development Information Exchange (INDIX) is a coalition of development aid organizations, including bilateral, multilateral and non-governmental agencies.
Its activities are coordinated by the Coordinating Unit for INDIX, which is housed at the International Development Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada. These activities are directed by a Steering Committee. The INDIX holds a general meeting once every two years, during which the members provide future directions for the Coordinating Unit.

Aims and objectives of INDIX
"Development and its kindred concern, environment, are going to require on the part of all concerned true professionalism in the new era. True professionalism means serious information, and serious information must be shared information."
Stephane Hessel Ambassadeur de France from his address to the First General Meeting of the Informal Study Group on Exchange of Development Information, Paris, June 1991
At a time when funds for international development research and aid to developing countries are becoming increasingly scarce, development aid agencies must find ways to make the most effective use of their resources.
Sharing information on their activities is one way in which these agencies can save money and time, by
- avoiding duplication of efforts achieved elsewhere, and
- helping them to find partners with whom they can pool funds and expertise.
The International Network for Development Information Exchange (INDIX) is dedicated to furthering the exchange of information within the development aid community.

A brief history of INDIX
INDIX began in 1989 as the Informal Study Group on Exchange of Development Information, a group of representatives of development aid agencies which met informally to discuss the problems involved in information sharing. The name of the group was changed to the International Network for Development Information Exchange (INDIX) at the group's Second General Meeting in 1993. To date, the INDIX has held two General Meetings, in June 1991 and October 1993. The next General Meeting will be held in 1995.
