Subject: UPDATE: Electronic Education/Distance Learning [GHANA]
To: Multiple recipients of list DEVEL-L <mailto:DEVEL-L@AMERICAN.EDU>

Firstly, our deepest gratitude goes out to many of you on the DEVEL-L List
for taking the time to give us advice and assistance over these past months.

It has been MUCH appreciated...and is ** STILL ** needed !!

Please send me E-Mail to receive the full detailed report and history (which is one full E-Mail message in length) on the launching of this pilot project in Ghana.

Would be most happy to share it with you.

Of interest to ACADEME: There is GREAT potential in this project for both master's theses and doctoral dissertations...for highly motivated advanced graduate students who want to make a contribution.

We hope to build a network, via E-Mail, of persons interested in electronic education in Africa, and who can help us brainstorm to improve and tweak aspects of the project, from curriculum development to finding/shipping donated computer equipment, from locating funding to actually going to Ghana on their own, rolling up their sleeves, and lending a hand.

Regards,

Cecil

Classrooms WITHOUT Walls: AFRICA Moves Forward

It has been a long and difficult birth. But we are now OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED, with the first programs having already been started, and the first group of volunteers having already arrived on site.

We are excited! We want to do what we can to help similar efforts reach fruition wherever possible on the African Continent.

The real work has yet to be done!!

A wonderful opportunity to help, even without necessarily leaving the comfort of one's armchair!

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ Lack of funding and insufficient computer equipment remain serious obstacles...but these are not insurmountable!

This project is being launched in Ghana as a non-profit endeavor under the aegis of a highly-regarded NGO, the Voluntary Workcamps Association of Ghana (VOLU), under the directorship of Francis Donkor (General Secretary). VOLU's chief architects and consultants for this project are Dr. Osei Darkwa and Bill Owen, who are working with a consortium of organizations and individuals in Ghana and around the world.

The first volunteers (from the USA, Australia, Germany and elsewhere) have recently arrived in Ghana and have begun working with their Ghanaian counterparts in launching the Computer Literacy/Distance Learning Project.

Thank you!
