A panel is to be held on the topic of "THE WORLD BANK AND FOUNATIONS IN
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR DEVELOPMENT". It is part of a World Bank
initiative to develop partnerships with foundations to promote
international development. The panel is scheduled for Tuesday
afternoon, June 23 in Toronto, Canada.

Panelists include: James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank; David Hamburg, President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York; Francis Charhon; President of Fondation de France; Dalene Seymore, representing the Kagiso Trust; Jorge Rodriguez, President of Fundacion Chile; and H. Jurgen Hess, of the Open Society Institute. Issues to be discussed include building the foundation sector in developing countries, internationalizing programs of foundations in developed countries, and improving institutions which link official donors, foundations and clients interested in sustainable development.

The panel is one of several within a symposium on Science and Technology for Development, organized by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and hosted by The World Bank, through its TechNet Initiative, and the Carnegie Corporation. In advance of the in-person conference in Toronto, TechNet is holding four virtual conferences via the Internet -- called Think Tanks. The Think Tanks will focus on the themes of: Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Environment, Health and Agriculture. These on-line discussions began on June 9 and continues until July 3.

To join the list-serve and participate in the discussion, or simply to review the postings, check the following web site:

The symposium is in turn being held within the GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE 97 conference in Toronto. The web site above also provides a link to the GK97 web site.
