Web-to-Email Gateway Purpose: Bellanet is increasing awareness of web-to-email gateways http://www.bellanet.org/email.html and helps to broaden the capacity of the development community to access the World Wide Web in areas with only email access. Partner: International Development Research Centre (IDRC).Specific Activities: In August 1997, Unganisha http://www.idrc.ca/unganisha (an IDRC project), with assistance from Bellanet, launched a GetWeb server which allows people without World Wide Web access to obtain web-based information via email. Coordination is taking place with other agencies interested in setting up similar systems. Bellanet is also helping to coordinate efforts amongst the various web-to-email developers through its WMAIL-DEV-CL mailing list. Information about Web access via Email (last updated August 5, 1997) As information is increasingly posted on the World Wide Web, there is still a sizable community of Internet users with access only to email. Webmail servers are used to retrieve WWW pages via email. By sending email to the servers below, you can retrieve documents from the specified web site. Many of these servers also allow access to other types of Internet tools such as gopher, archie, ftp and others. The following is a list of current (June 1997) webmail servers, and links to documents on how to use these servers to access information (these webmail servers are sometimes unavailable for days or even weeks at a time without explanation. Other webmail servers do not provide this ability. The email servers listed here are for the most part operated by kind-hearted volunteers at companies or universities. If you abuse (or over-use) the servers, there's a very good chance they will be shut down permanently. This actually happened to several of the email servers recently, so treat them with respect. If you have direct Internet access, let others who are less fortunate use the email servers. Try to limit your data transfers to one megabyte per day. Don't swamp the servers with many requests at a time.
