A number of new papers and reports on the use of collaborative approaches to environmental management are now directly available from the Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research website http://www.landcare.cri.nz/science/social/

Of particular interest to this group may be a recent review of a multi-stakeholder catchment management initiative. This report (46 pages) by Margaret Kilvington evaluates this programme, and documents the lessons learnt. It is available in HTML << http://www.landcare.cri.nz/science/social/index.shtml?whaingaroa >> and can also be downloaded as a postscipt file. The Whaingaroa Catchment Management Project (WCMP) represents the first formal attempt in New Zealand at establishing community-based, integrated environmental management on a catchment scale. The evaluation is comprised of two parts: A review of the progress of the community project steering group, established through the Whaingaroa Catchment management project; and an assessment of the trial process (based on the North American Atlantic Coastal Action Programme) used in the Whaingaroa Catchment management project. If you do not have Internet access and would like a hardcopy of this report contact Margaret on Email: mailto:Kilvingtonm@landcare.cri.nz

The lessons from a regionally-based initiative in the tussock grasslands of New Zealand to establish a community-based adaptive management process are also available through this site. This programme has now been running for five years. Site material includes an overview of ISKM (Integrated Systems for Knowledge Management) - an approach to managing information for decision making in complex situations, and on-line copies of related research papers.

Other pages provide information on group dynamics, urban biodiversity and participatory monitoring and evaluation (PM & E). Links are also provided to other sites in this area.

Feedback and comments on any of this material is welcome, and can be made directly to the researchers involved.

Regards Will
