The International Centre at the University of Calgary is pleased to announce the 2003 Summer Institute on Participatory Development. This year's theme is Appreciative Inquiry. The Institute will be held on campus during the week of June 23 - 27, 2003.

APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY Successful development efforts are often characterized by creative thinking. Yet the dominant approach to development continues to be
"problem-solving" or "needs-based"; which has inherent limitation in scope and imagination. Appreciative Inquiry (AI) offers an approach that focuses on strengths rather than needs or deficits on those things that energize and give life to organizations as a basis to create a vision of
"what is possible". Appreciative Inquiry is a strategy for purposeful and sustained change in organizations (communities; NGOs, businesses) in the North and the South. As the word "appreciative" suggests, AI looks at the "high points" in the life of an organization and seeks to build on these; the "inquiry" involves a series of facilitated interviews. The approach is easily learned, flexible and is found to result in a sustained shift in community or organizational thinking and behaviour.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE INSTITUTE? The Institute will be of particular interest to practitioners who wish to expand their knowledge of participatory development with focus on the application of the Appreciative Inquiry approach. This includes practitioners of international development as well as community facilitators, managers, consultants, policy makers and administrators in local, national and international organizations. Participants will learn how to engage their organizations and communities in the discovery and enhancement of factors that most dramatically support success.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE Availabe on PDF format on the Institute's web site at http://www.ucalgary.ca/international/institute.html

FACILITATORS: Dr. Charles Elliot: Charles Elliott is a leader in the field of Appreciative Inquiry (AI), using it as an innovative management approach, providing training, facilitating, and mentoring programmes through CPOT (the Cambridge Partnership for Organizational Transformation). Former Dean and Chaplain of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he was associate lecturer in economics and management science, he has used Appreciative Inquiry around the world in diverse organizations from village development councils, to multinational corporations. Dr. Elliot has spearheaded the introduction of Appreciative Inquiry into the British health care sector and is currently using AI extensively in the prison system. His publications in the field include "Locating the Energy for Change: An Introduction to Appreciative Inquiry", a comprehensive book addressing the theory and practice of AI.

Loretta Rose: Loretta Rose has a background in intercultural education, language teaching and learning, and international development. She has worked with refugee groups in Canada, and with community development projects in Latin America and Africa, and has used Appreciative Inquiry with NGOs, community groups, and churches. Ms. Rose is the Director of Coracle Consulting, a firm in Guelph, Ontario, that provides training, facilitation, and support for multicultural and community development initiatives. This includes training in Appreciative Inquiry, facilitation grounded in an appreciative approach, and project design, implementation, and evaluation. As well, she is a partner in WordWise, a company that publishes personal histories and conducts workshops on storytelling and using stories as the basis for exploration in all areas of life.

Noel Keough: Noel has worked for over 20 years as a professional engineer environmental consultant and community development specialist. He has worked with communities in Asia, Eastern Europe, The Middle East, Central America and across Canada. He worked for several years with the Canada-Asia Partnership Program of International Centre at UofC. His most recent project experience is facilitating community sustainability processes as part of the CIDA-sponsored the Jordan Valley Integrated Waste Management. Noel has experience using Participatory Rapid Appraisal, Adult Education and Popular Theatre Methods to animate community activities.

Noel is co-founder of Sustainable Calgary Society and a Director of PLAN:NET Ltd. - a network of international development consultants. He teaches in the UofC Northern Planning and Development Studies Theme School and is currently conducting his PhD research on community sustainability measurement and processes.
