Conference on ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT THROUGH AGRICULTURE

Boston, Massachusetts November 16-17, 1995

Organized by: Tufts University, Center for Agriculture, Food and Environment American Farmland Trust Henry A. Wallace Institute for Alternative Agriculture

Papers are invited for a conference dealing with ways that agriculture can offer environmental benefits, rather than simply reducing the damage it imposes on the environment. The goal of the conference is to foster a new kind of strategic thinking about agriculture based on "win-win" approaches that jointly serve both agricultural and environmental interests.

Some examples of environmental benefits that appropriately managed agricultural systems can provide include:

o Refuges for wildlife species that thrive in suitable agricultural ecosystems and that are being deprived of other habitat.

o Watershed protection and water quality enhancement.

o A source of renewable materials as an alternative to environmentally damaging extraction of nonrenewable resources.

o Environmentally advantageous waste recycling.

o Attractive sites for low-impact tourism that could reduce the demand for more environmentally degrading forms of tourism.

o Aesthetically appealing landscapes.

We are interested in presentations on both general strategies and specific examples of positive agriculture-environment interactions. Papers may be about research, field projects, general concepts, or legislative and policy issues. They may be descriptive, practice-oriented, theoretical, or empirical, and they may deal either with the U.S. or other parts of the world. We especially welcome papers that will interest people from a broad range of backgrounds, not just disciplinary specialists.

If you are interested in presenting a paper at this conference, please mail three copies of an abstract of 150 to 250 words by April 14, 1995 to:

William Lockeretz School of Nutrition Tufts University Medford, MA 02155

Informal inquiries about the suitability of a topic also are welcome:

617-627-3223 (Voice) 617-627-3887 (Fax) mailto:wlockeretz@infonet.tufts.edu

Notification of acceptance of papers will be sent by May 26, 1995.

An area also will be available for poster presentations. If you would like to display photos or other graphical materials about a project, please provide a brief description by April 14.
