INSTITUTE OF DEVELOPMENT STUDIES BRITISH LIBRARY FOR DEVELOPMENT STUDIESTEMPORARY DEVLINE PROJECT OFFICER
The DEVLINE (DEVelopment information onLINE) service of the British Library for Development Studies requires a temporary, full-time project officer for 6 months, to assist in the conversion and creation of information for new public World Wide Web, Gopher and File Transfer Protocol servers.
The postholder will work under the supervision of the Systems Librarian as part of a team comprised of library and computing staff. Duties will include sharing in the team's tasks of document/file creation and conversion, proof reading, developing and testing menus, researching methodology and software tools and liaising with and training information providers. If suitably qualified, the postholder could also expect to assist in server administration.
Candidates should have a good working knowledge of IBM PCs (or compatible), MS-DOS and Windows and familiarity with the use of Internet information retrieval client software for Telnet, Gopher, FTPand WWW. Experience of creating HTMLdocuments and Gopher menus and of UNIX, including system administration, will be an advantage.
Essential requirements for the job are good communication and keyboard skills, accuracy, attention to detail and the ability to work methodically with the minimum of supervision.
The post is suitable for a candidate from either a library/information or a computer science background. An interest in developing country issues and in information for economic and social development will be an advantage.
To start as soon as possible. Salary within Other Related Grade 1 (13,941 - 17,813 pounds p.a. pro rata).
