Our organization, Covenant House Latin America (Casa Alianza), is putting
together a curriculum guide about street children in Latin America, human
rights, and sustainability for use by high school students in North America
and Europe. We would very much like to know whether anyone has developed an
exercise or lesson that can be done in 45 minutes which would allow students
to understand how their lives are connected to those of street children.
This is not a simple task -- as we believe that most high school students do
not have enough knowledge to do this in such a short time. We think it would
take understanding:

White/European Entitlement Feelings Colonialism Liberal Theory (laissez faire) Trickle-Down Economics Structural Adjustment Economic Globalization Urban-Rural Migration

among other theories and concepts. We believe that it is important for the students to understand the assumptions which have (and do continue) to inform our policy decisions, our own self-concepts, and our choices. We also want to present such a critical view without being polemic. Any ideas? This would be one lesson in the larger curriculum guide.

We invite all your suggestions and citations of other sources which might help us.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Steven Malamud
