Dear friends (maily those interested in Brazil and in our efforts to make a difference) this is a copy of a report to the Partners of the Americas about our latest accomplishments. Please, read more at our home page on development issues and experiences - see URL below). Two or three good news recently happened:
1 - we got the right man for that project involving youth and citizenship, mainly aimed to education in the law! As you know, when in DC I have visited NICEL's headquarters (National Institute for Citizenship Education in the Law) and we discussed the possibility to implement their programs >and techniques there, quite south of the border... They have
>interesting projects involving youngsters and the awareness
>that the law should be there to help people, not to oppress
>them, and that they must know the law in order to love them...
>The man, the perfect coordinator for this program is
>Edmilson Caminha, a teacher, a writer, a journalist, who
>has been attending the last three or four monthly meetings,
>but who, yesterday, told us about his total commitment to
>this program (the youth and the law), as he perceived the
>importance to foster citizenship awareness on their rights
>and duties (duties that are, if you think deeply about,
>not duties, but also rights to be useful, sincere, kind,
>collaborative, productive, caring, fair, responsible etc.
>
>2. We were contacted by Geovane dos Santos, a young leader of
>Gama (another satellite-city), another participant of that
>International Seminar we have organized in 1993 with the 4-H,
>here in Brasilia. He came to invite us to collaborate with
>them to organize a Seminar on Young Leadership towards the 21th
>Century. Of course we agreed with, and we are already helping
>him and his group (they call themselves "Citizens of the World"
>to organize the Seminar from April 24 to 28. It will happen at
>the City of Peace (Holistic University of Brasilia) and I was
>invited to talk about leadership and real social transformation.
>I will invite them all to work with us, with you... They will
>be 50 youngsters, from youth groups already organized in the
>churches, service clubs, college and high schools' student clubs,
>politic parties, community associations, boy and girl scouts etc.
>This seminar will be included in our plan, to 96, for that Citizen
>Participation program, funded by USAID. Pedro and I have prepared
>a small project asking $ 1,400 to Partners USA to help us to
>promote this Seminar. Pedro will fax it to you tomorrow.

>3. Yesterday I went to Santa Maria to visit the social community
>bank we are helping to organize there... I went with Jose Ivan
>(a very active agent of the Government of Brasilia, but who works
>also as a passionate volunteer) and John Garrison, the World Bank
>representative in the relationship with the Brazilian NGOs. It
>was very important to visit the cooperative, its (future)
>headquarters, the Open Factory where they are producing the bricks
>to build the headquarters-school of the co-op (and also to sell).
>I hope that World Bank will understand the importance to help us
>to change Brazilian reality from its capital. If we succeed to
>change Brazil, this would mean that any country could change and
>that humankind can hope to overcome their social and environmental
>defies. Soon I will send a Brasilia UpDate with more details about
>this project; anyway you can read everything about at:

>
>Thank you, J.
