****************************************************************************** THE OMNI PROJECT DEVELOPS NEW SUGAR FORTIFICATION MANUAL TO SHARE FORTIFICATION EXPERIENCES GLOBALLY ******************************************************************************In order to share the experiences of those involved in sugar fortification in Central America so that other countries can plan and implement this important intervention, OMNI has recently developed a Manual for Sugar Fortification with Vitamin A. The three volume manual, available in both English and Spanish, presents technical guidelines to systematize and facilitate the establishment of and execution of a vitamin A sugar fortification program.
Part 1, Guidelines for the Development, Implementation, Monitoring, and Evaluation of a Vitamin A Sugar Fortification Program, describes the basic elements to be considered in establishing an appropriate program for vitamin A sugar fortification. It offers an overview of the entire program so that those managing and coordinating sugar processing activities have information on the essential components to ensure an adequate operation.
Part 2, Technical and Operational Guidelines for Preparing Vitamin A Premix and Fortified Sugar, is written for technical personnel in charge of implementing sugar fortification. It describes how to manufacture the vitamin A premix and details procedures for adding the premix to the sugar.
Part 3, Analytical Methods for the Control and Evaluation of Sugar Fortification with Vitamin A, is written primarily for laboratory personnel in charge of analyses. It presents field and laboratory methods for estimating the retinol content in the premix and in fortified sugar. Part 3 also explains how to determine retinol levels in biological samples, which is important in evaluating the impact of a fortification program.
The authors of the manual are Dr. Guillermo Arroyave, former head of the biochemistry lab at INCAP and pioneer of sugar fortification in Guatemala in the 1970s, and Dr. Omar Dary, the current head of the biochemistry lab at INCAP, who is actively involved in sugar fortification programs in Central America.

***************************************************************************** OPPORTUNITIES FOR MICRONUTRIENT INTERVENTIONS (OMNI) is funded by the Office of Health and Nutrition of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C. and managed by John Snow, Inc. OMNI's mission is accomplished by developing integrated, comprehensive programs and strategies to reduce and eliminate major micronutrient deficiencies throughout the developing world. Participating countries are based on their micronutrient malnutrition problems, commitment by local officials (public and private) to micronutrient activities, and their capacity to achieve and sustain a demonstrable impact.
