Dear Friends,

Thank you to all who responded to our survey regarding ethical considerations/dilemmas of development projects a few weeks ago. Your information was extremely helpful and I look forward to creating a dialogue with those of you who interested. We're now appealing for more specific information. As with the last survey all information is confidential and will remain anonymous.

In order to direct our design of a code of ethics for development practitioners, we are creating a fictional NGO. Our group has chosen rural Mozambique as the location for our work. We have a general goal of assisting in economic and social recovery after a brutal civil war. Of particular concern to us are the children, many of whom have been severely traumatized and/or orphaned. The breakdown in infrastructure as a result of the war has also left the state education system sorely lacking - particularly in the rural areas. We are envisioning a project with a grassroots base which would (as a main focus) address the need for social, emotional and economic support of orphans, traumatized children and children who need/want schooling (thus, hopefully including all children of the vilage, and their families - we wish to make this an inclusive, community-integrated project). If anyone can offer advice, insight, corrections to what has been said above it would be greatly appreciated. In particular, please respond if you have had experience with war-traumatized children and knows of techniques/methods/programmes to encourage healing. If you can share any ethical dilemmas that you experienced in any project similar to this, it would also be helpful. Again, all information is confidential, names need not be used - we are simply interested in the information and experiences. We would be happy to share our research results when they are completed at the end of March. Thank-you in advance for your response.

Sincerely, Sasha Jackson
