I too would recommend the compaqs. We've had no trouble with several 386
and 486 Contura models over three years of constant travel and use in
the US, Peru and Nepal. I can't speak to the heat and humidity issues
of lowland climates, but for the rough travel conditions of mountain
areas, these machines have held up well.
Look for a solid steel hinge pin.
