DIFKO WINS USAF CONTRACT
FOR ASCENSION ISLAND

Difko Administration (US), Inc., of San Diego, Calif., will shortly be erecting four turbines on remote Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean, according to Difko CEO Jorn Larsen. The 1-MW project was awarded by the U.S. Air Force to Difko Service Co. and Pacific Industrial Electric. Contracts were signed September 5, Larsen said, and a "notice to proceed" should be issued around the end of this month.

Difko intends to use four Micon 250-kW machines, of the M700-250-50 model. The machines will be manufactured in Minnesota and will have a height of 40 meters and a rotor diameter of 29.8 meters, Larsen said. The turbines will offset diesel use on the island, which is located just south of the Equator, between Africa and South America. The island is only 35 square miles in area.

The contract allows Difko 440 days to complete the project, beginning September 5, and Larsen said the firm plans to ship the turbines within the next four months. No special modifications were needed for the remote location except for a non-corrosive paint to withstand the salt air, he said.

There are no civilians on the island, which is home to a U.S. Air Force Base although it is under British rule. Someone on the island will be trained in maintenance of the turbines, said Larsen, but monitoring and all possible maintenance will be done in Palm Springs, Calif. Regular visits will be made to the island, he added, for periodic service and any necessary repairs.

In other news, a Difko spokesperson said the firm is proceeding with development of two projects in Germany. A 3-MW project in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is slated for early 1996, and a 15-MW project in Thyringen is scheduled for the fall of 1996. The projects are expected to be constructed with Bonus and Micon turbines. _______________________________________________________________________________

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has authorized me to offer an electronic edition of its newsletter, _Wind Energy Weekly_, from which the above article is excerpted, at no cost.

For those of you who have not previously seen excerpts from back issues, the _Weekly_ reports on the outlook for renewable energy, energy-related environmental issues, and renewable energy legislation in addition to wind industry trade news. The electronic edition normally runs about 10kb in length.

The free electronic edition of the _Weekly_ is intended as an educational publication for those without a commercial interest in the wind energy industry. If your interest in wind is commercial in nature, please write to mailto:<windmail@mcimail.com> for more information about AWEA membership and publications.

If you would like a free electronic subscription, send me an e-mail request. Please include information on your position, organization, and reason for interest in the publication. ____________________________________________________________________________
