you might also want to look at David Harvey's book, "The Condition of
Postmodernity" in which he discusses these issues of timne and the
shrinking of space as well.  there is a lot to read on this.  also, look
at EP Thompson's piece on "Time, Work-Discipline and Industrial
Capital" published in 1991 edition of "Customs in Conflict."  Good
background piece.
