The Canadian Public Health Association has been requested by the Department
of Community and Public Health, Bir Zeit University (West Bank) to
advertise and recruit for a public health specialist who would be
interested in a one-year position as a Professor of Public Health in this
Department's new Masters of Public Health Program (to be launched in
September 1997).   The term for this positon would be September 1, 1997 to
August 31, 1998.  The Department is interested in recruiting a Canadian,
given the Canadian perspective on public health and the Canadian health
care model.

Candidates should be a relatively senior person, equivalent to an Associate Professor. The individual should be able to teach environmental health, primary health care, health and society, and basic public health. The course load is one class per session. The candidate would also supervise student projects and theses. The teaching language is English. Knowledge of Arabic is not required, but would be an asset. The individual would be able to carry out independent health research.

The University has indicated that it could offer a monthly stipend of up to US$2,000, as well as a modest housing allowance. The successful individual would be responsible for personal health and life insurance, as well as for their airfare.

Bir Zeit University is an independent, Palestinian institution, founded in 1924, situated 26 km north of Jerusalem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The Department of Community and Public Health takes an integrated and multi-disciplinary approach to health. The Department focuses on environmental health and sanitation, disability rehabilitation, nutrition, women's health, and recently, urban health and non-communicable diseases. The Department's strength lies in its community-based applied research on health issues. Research activities are usually conducted in cooperation with local groups who provide health and allied health services to the local population.
