International Symposium on Public Initiative in the Economy Past, Present and Future
6-8 October 1997 Istanbul -Turkey
Call for Papers First Circular
Purpose and Scope of the Symposium
Global Capital is today in the process of dictating a program of globalization, the so called ?New World Order?, the popular slogans of which are; liberalization, privatization, structural adjustment, contraction of the state etc.., in the hope of overcoming its crisis. The aim is to create a world on which nation states, parliaments, political parties, unions, ballot boxes have no influence, a world outside the control of the people and democracy in which there is no place for public ownership in the economy. The role of state interference in the economic sphere is looked down upon as populism, command economy and election time economics. The ?free market? god does not allow for any interference at all. It is, therefore, of utmost importance today to undertake a scientific appraisal of the public sector in the various economies, evaluate its role in a more equitable world and explain this to the public. This symposium aims to provide a forum for researchers and implementers worldwide, to discuss the merits of the public sphere in the economy, to counter the dominant market ideology and to provide an opportunity for the exchange of ideas on alternatives and the struggle for them.
