Dear Friends

Urban violence in Brazil has an increasing negative impact in our development possibilities. The lost of many thousands of youngsters (violence is the main cause of death among teenagers), the money lost, the resources that could be spent in other areas, more productive than fighting criminality, and investments that fly to other safer cities or countries, are some reasons for this negative impact). Just in the city of Sao Paulo (the most *developed* Brazilian city) there were - just in this beginning year of 1998 - more than 400 murders. An average about 50 people per week, mainly during the weekends..... At the same time, the discussions about the issue are really very superficial, so I wrote this article, for the main newspaper of Brasilia, deepening the analysis and bringing some new visions, at least here in Brazil. I would like to hear from you about this issue, since I believe that not only Brazil faces this problem (even I know that here it is more critical and complex, as everything here uses to be...)

The article can be read in English at: www.partners-bsbdc.org/seeds.htm

Thank you for your interest, J.
