To all interested scholars, practitioners, and students:

I am very pleased to announce that the Yale Human Rights & Development Law Journal is now accepting submissions for its Fall 1998 issue.

The Journal was founded this year by students and scholars at Yale Law School. As the name implies, the focus of the Journal is on human rights and development issues. Potential submitters are encouraged to explore the widest possible array of perspectives regarding these two fields and the way in which they interact. We especially encourage submissions from scholars from outside the legal profession, practitioners, and non-American authors. The deadline for the Fall issue will be July 1998. Since submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis, authors are encouraged to submit their articles as soon as possible.

Our Spring 1998 issue will include pieces from Amy Chua of Duke University, Ravi Nair of the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre in New Delhi, Philippe Sands of New York University, and S. James Anaya of the Indian Law Resource Center and Iowa University. The subject matter of the pieces range from a discussion of the impact of market/democratic reforms on muti-ethnic developing countries to an exploration of how human rights organizations should react to abuses perpetrated by non-state actors. These examples are meant to illustrate the diveristy of the Journal's articles, and should not be used as an indicator of the content of future issues. The Journal does not seek to represent any single notion of human rights or development, but rather aims to create a forum in which the widest possible array of viewpoints can be discussed. Our articles tend to be somewhat shorter (20-50 journal pages) than the typical law review article, and often draw upon a variety of fields outside the law, such as political science, economics, or sociology.

Printed versions of the Journal will be made available, but the primary medium for the Journal will be the Internet. Copies of all articles will be available on the databases LEXIS-NEXIS and Westlaw, and on our web site, which will be operational by May. By using the Internet, we hope to bring high-quality scholarship to as many people around the world as possible. Individuals and institutions that desire a printed version can purchase reprints of specific pieces, volumes, or issues.

Submissions can be sent to the following address:
