PUBLICATION OF A SERIES OF MANUALS ON RENEWABLE ENERGIES

INTRODUCTION

The Spanish NGO of cooperation for the development, named "Ingenieria Sin Fronteras", is working on the publication of a series of manuals about the use of renewable energies in projects of cooperation for the development. These are practical sources of information, written in Spanish and easy to understand. The first four are as follows: 1. The renewable sources of energy (an overview). 2. Biogas energy. 3. Eolian energy. 4. Photovoltaic energy.

They will be available by the end 1995. ISF (our organization) intends to make them known to the public, and find out about groups of people that would be interested in these manuals. -----------------------------------------------

The Spanish association called "Ingenieria Sin Fronteras", ISF, (Engineering without frontiers) is a non-governmental organization of cooperation for the development engaged in the realization of projects, both in our country and in the scope of developing countries (mainly in the areas of Latin America and Africa). We also prepare activities in Spain, aimed at the University and professional workteams of Engineering, in relation with the fields of information and awareness about inequality and injustice between North and South countries. We have formed several teams that we call Research areas dedicated to the study of "appropriate technologies". These areas support the realization of our projects of cooperation and also assist the work of other organizations. Some of these groups have been working for three years on the preparation of manuals about the use of renewable energies in projects of cooperation. The first four titles are: 1. The renewable energies: their role in the cooperation for the development and in the design of a model of sustainable development. 2. Systems of anaerobic digestion in projects of cooperation. 3. Systems of Wind energy in projects of cooperation: water-pumping and autonomous generation of electricity. 4. Systems of photovoltaic energy in projects of cooperation: water-pumping and autonomous generation of electricity.

These manuals are written in Spanish, contain practical information and are easy to understand by readers that lack expertise on these matters. They are aimed at communities, NGO's and individuals to evaluate the possibilities of the use of these sources in small communities and design the construction of a suitable system of energy supply. Those interested will only be asked to contribute with the delivery expenses of the copies. In the case of NGO's and individuals in Europe, Canada and the USA the manuals will be available at a low cost. Our intention is to start a process of information exchange together with experiences among those groups getting the manuals. One of the ideas is to create a service for the revision and enlargement of future editions. Although the publication will not be ready until the end of this year, we would be willing to contact other NGO's and communities interested in any of the manuals. If you should be interested, please contact ISF. We will send you more information. If, in any case, you know NGO's, groups or communities that may be interested, please let them know this information.

Best wishes Valentin Villarroel
