Dear list members,
In Pakistan the Government is trying to involve the NGOs and Private
sector in the following sectors:

1. Primary education Trying to establish school management committees to monitor the operation of primary schools. These would be mainly responsible for reducing teacher absenteeism and carry out petty repairs and maintenance. Some progress has been made in establishing the commmittees but it is difficult to monitor the working of the committees.

2. Primary Health So far trying to involve the private sector/NGOs in the delivery of health services in the rural areas on contract basis. But without much success. Private sector is not interested.

3. Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Trying to hand over the exisiting water supply and sanitation schemes to the community. The community is expected to bear the burden of the Operational and Maintenance Costs after the scheme has been transferred to them. For this purpose the Government has set up commuinty mobolization teams. All future schemes are being constructed only if the community will be willing to take over the scheme on completion. Some deposit is being taken from the community.

4. Population Not much has been done in this area.

We would like to share experiences with others in this area.

regards
