ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE IN CENTRAL ASIA- HELP NEEDED
Dear friends and colleagues,
Environmental catastrophe occurred on Lake Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan, Middle Asia) on May 20, 1998. 1762 kg NaCN were thrown into the lake because of the lorry's crash. The 20-tonns container with the chemical was transported to the gold-mining factory of Kyrgyz-Canadian joint venture +Cumtor Operating Company+. The container was broken in the mountain river (14 km from the lake Issyk-Kul). The poisoning substance immediately came to the lake. Currently situation is improving because NaCN is not stable and it+s degrading in the water. Nevertheless, situation has to be analyzed and help of the experts and scientists is urgently needed. Mr. Ismail Dairov , Head of the International Department of the Ministry of Environment of Kyrgyzstan had asked us (Center +Eco-Accord+) for the help to establish contacts with the experts.
