Mike, I've been teaching mature students for 20 years now in Business and Technology. May I suggest you get your hands on a new book by Robert Cornesky and William Lazarus, _Continuous Quality Improvement in the Classroom: A Collaborative Approach_, pub. Cornesky &Associates, Inc. Aug '95.

I rely on my students being well prepared and use teamwork in the classroom during sessions of from 75 minutes to 8 hours. Typically I have groups prepare a major project report using the material studied in the course and part of the class time is spent with my being a resource person for the teams. Bob Cornesky's ideas after decades of work on collaborative learning in higher education have helped my revise my approach. I am using it now in a small class. The thing I like about it is that it is the first time that I am sensing an acceptance of me as a fellow team member by the groups. Additionally, each team understands that the class (including me) as a whole are a resource available to help in their success. Success was defined early in a class exercise as suggested by Cornesky.

If you are familiar with Continuous Quality Improvement, you will recognize some telltale threads. If not, let me assure you this is not a _fad_ method. It really works and takes particular advantage of the numerous skills and talents all students bring to the classroom. The emphasis is on everyone learning - not on the teacher teaching.

God Bless.

Phil
