/* Written 6:03 PM Nov 14, 1995 by tomgray in igc:energy.news */ CHINA PLANS MAJOR EXPANSION OF XINJIANG WIND POWER PLANTChina plans to boost the capacity of the Dabancheng wind farm in the Uigur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang Province from its current level of 10 MW to 100 MW by the year 2000, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The wind plant is located southeast of Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, China's arid and windy northwestern province. It was built in 1992 with Danish government financing assistance, the article said.
China is also looking to expand the use of windpower generally, with plans to increase installed capacity from 30 MW at present to 1,000 MW by the turn of the century. Its total wind potential, the article said, is estimated at 253,000 MW, or just slightly less than its hydro potential.
Chinese officials reportedly favor wind and other renewables because of their ability to produce electricity without fossil fuel pollution. The province of Guangdong, which has experienced rapidly growing electricity demand and accompanying pollution, has recently announced plans to require pollution control equipment on all new coal-fired power plants. _______________________________________________________________________________
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has authorized me to offer an electronic edition of its newsletter, _Wind Energy Weekly_, from which the above article is excerpted, at no cost.
For those of you who have not previously seen excerpts from back issues, the _Weekly_ reports on the outlook for renewable energy, energy-related environmental issues, and renewable energy legislation in addition to wind industry trade news. The electronic edition normally runs about 10kb in length.
The free electronic edition of the _Weekly_ is intended as an educational publication for those without a commercial interest in the wind energy industry. If your interest in wind is commercial in nature, please write to mailto:<windmail@mcimail.com> for more information about AWEA membership and publications.
If you would like a free electronic subscription, send me an e-mail request. Please include information on your position, organization, and reason for interest in the publication. ___________________________________________________________________
