I am presently researching the scope, quality, impact and type of voluntary contributions (i.e as undertaken by Non- Governmental organisations, community based organisations and individuals) in the field of shelter and human settlements development. This would include a wide range of activities, such as, housing and infrastructure construction; environmental upgrading and improvement of basic services; human settlements planning and management; reconstruction, re-habilitation and resettlement after conflict or war; and other social problems associated with urbanisation (i.e street children, crime, violence, etc). This research would document the importance of the voluntary sector in sustainable human settlements development and would feed into the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UNCHS), Habitat II Conference, which is to be held in Istanbul, next year. Much of the valuable work that volunteers and voluntary organisations presently do in this area goes unrecorded. This research hopes to help reddress this by presenting a series of case studies of volunteer contributions from all over the world (although there is a stress on developing countries). In this respect, I would welcome information on relevant, interesting and innovative programmes/projects. It would be helpful, if you could identify in any information that you might send: the partners involved, the funding arrangements, the types of volunteers involved, the level of community participation, the lessons learnt and what you see as the key issues and opportunities for voluntary contributions in the future.
In turn, please do let me know if I can make available to you any information that I might have on the work that I have conducted so far.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanking you for your assistance.
