Building Bridges Through Collaboration, Communication, and Celebration is the theme of the Society for Nutrition Educations (SNE) 30th Annual Meeting, July 22-26, 1997, at the Radisson Gouverneurs Hotel in Montreal, Quebec. Past participants remark, This is the meeting to attend for those who teach nutrition. Registered dietitians, university professors, media consultants and extension staff all meet together on equal turf with a common goal educating the public about nutrition. This meeting will provide a forum for exchanging ideas and information on how to improve and strengthen nutrition education practice and provide an environment for developing professional skills. PUBLICATION AVALIABLE: REPORT ON THE OTTAWA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FOOD FORTIFICATION
A report on the Ottawa International Conference on Food Fortification is available from the OMNI project. The Forum, organized by The Micronutrient Initiative (MI), Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition (PAMM), and The Keystone Center, was unique in the diversity of its participants, representing multinational corporations (such as Proctor and Gamble, Campbell Soup, Nestle, Kellogg, Frito Lay), national food companies, NGOs, international donors and government ministries from 15 developing and 5 developed nations. Through the partial support of the conference and the sponsorship of selected individuals from priority countries, USAID advanced its strategic objective of ensuring long-term sustainability for micronutrient interventions by enlisting private sector involvement. USAID, through OMNI, sponsored a number of both public and private sector participants from Ecuador, Bolivia, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Egypt. With financial support from USAID (OMNI), the World Bank, UNICEF, ILSI, and UNDP, the Forum aimed to: create awareness among all stakeholders of the global problem of micronutrient malnutrition; garner trust and develop creative solutions amenable to all stakeholders, public and private; and to discuss and disseminate food fortification strategies which have the potential to provide nutrient-rich foods affordably and sustainably to populations in need. "Just do it!" was one common theme. While it is important to recognize that barriers to fortifying food exist, greater health problems are caused by not moving forward and the barriers should not hold up efforts to create a comprehensive strategy to combat micronutrient malnutrition.. These national discussions should address such issues as: research necessary to determine a country-specific, overall strategy; target populations; technology and information transfer; consumer awareness and education; regulations, enforcement and monitoring programs; and economic, pricing and cost issues. In response to needs expressed at the Ottawa Forum, OMNI offered to provide information packets on the state-of-the-art practices in fortifying specific products. Collected studies and "how-to" information on fortifying a range of products such as oil, tea, rice, and wheat flour will be available from OMNI in July of this year. A copy of this report can be obtained by contacting the OMNI project. **************************************************************************** OPPORTUNITIES FOR MICRONUTRIENT INTERVENTIONS (OMNI) is funded by the Office of Health and Nutrition of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C. and managed by John Snow, Inc. OMNI's mission is accomplished by developing integrated, comprehensive programs and strategies to reduce and eliminate major micronutrient deficiencies throughout the developing world. Participating countries are based on their micronutrient malnutrition problems, commitment by local officials (public and private) to micronutrient activities, and their capacity to achieve and sustain a demonstrable impact. ****************************************************************************** OMNI is located at 1616 North Fort Myer Dr, Suite 1100, Arlington, Virginia 22209 USA - Tel: 703 528-7474 - Fax: 703 528-7480 E-mail: mailto:omni_project@jsi.com WWW: http://www.jsi.com/intl/omni/home ******************************************************************************
