          Please refer him to the data series "Agricultural and
          Pastoral Production" at his Central Statistical Office in
          Lusaka, I believe there is a data series for Commercial
          Farms that goes back to the 1930's that would show the
          growth of maize production.

Corporate farms tied to copper production would be the development event that stimulated maize production to feed the miners with meal that was convenient to cook up in little time.
