The Honduran Consulates in Houston and Miami have begun to receive donations of food, clothing and medical supplies. The following is excerpted from a statement issued by the Consul in Houston:

There is no electric power, no drinking water and the source system is failing. The rain is continuos and strong, and the wind is provoking damages. Therefore, the President, Carlos Flores Facusse, declared the country in STATE of EMERGENCY and request help of friends and neighboring countries.

Due to the intense damage to the food industry and to countries hygiene produced by the flooding and strong winds and what is expected there after; the items of most critical need requested by the agency of the Government (COPECO) are as follows: food, baby food, powdered milk, drinking water, antibiotics (pediatric & Adults), anti-diarrhoea, anti-decongestants, antipyretics (to lower fever), analgesics of all kinds, disposal syringes & needles, cotton, distilled water for IV & IM injections, analyzer drinking water, surgical tape of all kinds, IV connections, soaps, disinfectant wet towels, bandages, gauze of all kinds for bandages, gazes of all kinds, skin disinfectant (anti-fungus: powder-lotion-cream-ointment), intravenous fluids (all kinds), alcohol, disposable diapers, covers, children clothes, flash lights with batteries. The Consulate of Honduras, in the name of the people and the Government is, with all respect, requesting the help of the active forces and the people of the State of Texas.

The location of the collection of items is set at the following address, with all responsibility of this Consulate: Sterling Electronics 4201 Southwest Freeway Houston, Texas 77027 phone: (713) 622-4572, 622-7911 fax: (713) 622-3540 * We’ll be open every day, including Saturday & Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. For monetary donations, the people should send a check to the Consulate payable to the " Honduran Relief Fund " and other contributions can be also made to the American Red Cross disaster Relief Fund by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW or 1-800-257-7575 and the caller should identify his check as going to the " Honduran Relief Effort ".

This has been disastrous for a country unprepared to handle an emergency of anywhere near this magnitude.
