The Search for Sustainable Livelihoods

Despite decades of "development," poverty in the South has
continued to increase. Existing development approaches may
lend themselves to elegant models, but they are not
working. We need to find alternative paths.
"The Search for Sustainable Livelihoods" shares knowledge
emerging from household and community level initiatives in
the South. It is grounded in the sustainable livelihoods
projects of two non-governmental organisations, Development
Alternatives in India and Environnement et Développement du
Tiers Monde (ENDA) in Senegal.
This online module is an attempt to present local people's
perspectives on sustainable livelihoods. The projects
highlighted here encompass achievements as well as
disappointments. The projects' approaches and priorities
may be different, but they also share many common ideas. By
sharing our experiences through the Internet with fellow
NGO workers, development agencies, students, and
journalists, we hope to encourage the promotion of
sustainable livelihoods within other communities around the
world.
The Search for Sustainable Livelihoods module consists of 3
sections:
1) an overview of sustainable livelihoods with examples
drawn from India and Senegal
<http://sdgateway.net/livelihoods/>
2) a section on sustainable livelihoods in India
<http://www.ecouncil.ac.cr/devalt/livelihoods/>
3) a section on sustainable livelihoods in Senegal (in
French) <http://www.enda.sn/modesdevie/>
The Search for Sustainable Livelihoods was prepared by
Development Alternatives and ENDA with support from the
International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)
as part of collaborative work of the Sustainable
Development Communications Network (SDCN - formerly the
Spinning the Web Network).
The SDCN was established in May 1998 to help develop joint
communications projects and to share knowledge among a
global network of leading sustainable development
organizations. This module was made possible with
support from the International Development Research Centre
(IDRC).
Stay tuned for more changes to the SD Gateway
<http://sdgateway.net/> in the coming months as we include
more of our collaborative work and new initiatives as the
SDCN. Currently the SD Gateway houses over 1,600 links, and
we provide services such as a calendar of events, a job
bank, the Sustainability Web Ring, a discussion forum, and
listings of mailing lists (listservs) and news sites
dealing with sustainable development.
