I don't have any suggestions re: theoretical texts, but I wonder if you've
looked into the use of pagers/beepers as a communications tool for groups
and individuals who are trying to avoid CCP supervision.

I remember reading an article (either NYT or LA Times, I think) about 2-3 years ago about the increased use of pagers in Beijing, especially among activists and black marketeers. Instead of giving a phone number as a call back, people would often transmit codes that would correspond to a meeting place, etc. If I remember correctly, there were even pamphlets full of common code designations for various spots around the city -- Tiananmen, Wangfujing, etc., etc.
