Yannick Etienne, a Haitian Labor Rights Activist with Batay Ouvriye will be speaking about worker's struggles in Haiti at a brown bag luncheon at the United Methodist Building, 100 Maryland Avenue NE, Conference Room 2 at 12:30 pm. Lunch will be provided.
Ms. Etienne will discuss the Haitian labor situation and, in particular, the difficulties facing workers who are involved in clothing and toy assembly production in Haiti. Batay Ouvriye is an association of unions, committees and workers from the industrial, agricultural and informal sectors in Haiti. It organizes workers to defend their rights by forming unions, educating the workers in legal matters as well as articulating their rights to their employers and governmental institutions. Batay offers services to the workers including legal advice and seminars on the labor codes. Ms. Etienne is a member of the commission for international solidarity of Batay Ouvriye and a member of the steering committee.

Cirilo Ortero, a Nicaraguan environmentalist and Food Security Advocate will be speaking about Structural Adjustment in Nicaragua at the Methodist Building at 100 Maryland Avenue, NE Conference Room 2 at 12:30pm.
Mr. Otero is the former Executive Director of the Nicaraguan Environmental Movement. He is currently the coordinator for the Coalition of Interest Groups for Lobbying and Alternative Proposals (Grupo Propositivo de Cabildeo e Instancia -- GPC), an organization analyzing and working to improve Nicaragua's food security through lobbying government and international financial institutions. The GPC is made up of: Centro Humboldt; FADCANIC (Foundation for the Development and Autonomy of the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua); FACS (Augusto C. Sandino Foundation); UNAG (National Union of Farmers and Ranchers); MAN (Nicaraguan Environmental Movement); FENACOOP (Federation of Cooperatives); CISAS (Center for Information and Health Counseling); CEPAD (Nicaraguan Council of Protestant Churches); and Red de Mujeres contra la Violencia (Network of Women against Violence).
October 4, 1997 NATIONAL DAY OF CONSCIENCE 11:00AM In Front of Pentagon City Mall
On Saturday, October 4th, Ms. Etienne will be the featured speaker at a rally to protest sweatshops and child labor, on the occasion of the National Day of Conscience to Stop Sweatshops and Child Labor. The demonstration will begin at 11am in front of the Pentagon City Mall, where Disney has an outlet store. The rally is supported by Witness for Peace, the Women's Division of the United Methodist Church, Campaign for Labor Rights, and other groups. Dozens of similar rallies are planned to take place on October 4th in other US cities.
