At the same time, the internship allows them to refine their expertise and widen their experience in their field of work.

Interested individuals should submit their curriculum vitae along with a letter of intent to the Gender and Sustainable Development Program Officer mailto:rmontoya@idrc.ca.

• WOMEN AND WATER-PUMPS IN BANGLADESH: The impact of participation in irrigation groups on women's status, Barbara van Koppen and Simeen Mahmud

Women's participation and the impact on their status has been studied in 35 female and mixed sex irrigation groups dispersed over the country, and supported by five different NGOs and the Grameen Bank. The NGO approach, the group strength and the main aim of the enterprise appeared to have a strong influence on the outcome. There are female-managed irrigation enterprises in which male relatives are only financially involved; here women's economic, social, familial and personal status improves considerably. On the other hand, there are women's groups where women are only intermediaries for loan-taking, which has a limited impact on their status. Women heads of households contribute to and benefit from the enterprise under all conditions.

This book describes the background, methodologies and conclusions to the studies in detail, with summaries of the policy implications. These insights should encourage further support for gender-balanced agro-technological development in rural Bangladesh and elsewhere. 256pp. 240 x 170mm. February 1996. Paperback. ISBN 1 85339 336 3. £9.95. US$18.95.

-------------------------------------- • Energy and Environment Technology Source Books series A new series of source books on energy and environment technologies relevant to women, prepared by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). The books are targeted at a non-technical audience of women end-users and will cover a range of activities that require energy both at the household and enterprise level as well as at the community and macro-level.

– RURAL TRANSPORT, UNIFEM In rural areas, moving from place to place consumes a lot of people's time and effort. They may have to travel long distances to reach water supplies, health facilities, grinding mills or markets. Often women in particular do not have access to a means of transport besides walking and carrying goods on their heads.

This book seeks to raise awareness and to provide information on how rural transport problems might be identified and addressed. It highlights rural transport activities and needs, considers household, agricultural and other transport needs, and deals with transport and marketing needs. Consideration is also given to improving local transport infrastructure and establishing local services so that women do not have to travel so far. 80pp. 246 x 174mm. July 1996. Paperback. ISBN 1 85339 345 2. £7.95. US$15.50.

– WATER SUPPLY Water is a women's issue. In developing countries the responsibility for water transport and the operation and maintenance of traditional water supply systems lies almost entirely with women. Collecting the daily water needs can take a quarter of a woman's working day and more than a quarter of her daily food intake, however, the workload could decrease significantly with better tools and techniques.

This book aims to promote understanding of water supply technologies, water supply management and the project cycle to enable women to make informed choices. It also contains information on how to assess the suitability of different water supply options and how to find technical and financial assistance. It is suitable for use by technical and non-technical project managers, project staff, extension officers, trainers and consultants concerned with women in development and women's organizations. 80pp. 246 x 174mm. July 1996. Paperback. ISBN 1 85339 344 4. £7.95. US$15.50.
