PRESIDENT, AMIGOS DES LAS AMERICAS

AMIGOS is a thirty-three-year-old Houston-based, international and not-for-profit organization, which provides high-school and college-age young people from around the United States opportunities for cross-cultural encounters, personal growth, and community health service in eight Latin American countries. AMIGOS sends about 600 young people abroad each year plus 90 field staff. Eighteen US chapter affiliates help support the volunteers in 200 Latin American communities.

A national search for a new president is ongoing. The Search Committee seeks a collaborative, inspirational leader (and hands-on manager) unafraid of hard work. The CEO will be based in Houston with frequent travel throughout the United States and Latin America. An ideal candidate will:

. . . evidence experience and commitment to young people's leadership development;

. . . have proven experience managing a chapter or membership-based organization;

. . . have experienced cross-cultural encounters as a young person;

. . . be an effective budget manager and fund-raiser;

. . . be willing to commit to AMIGOS for five to seven years;

Other personal characteristics or experiences that AMIGOS seeks, are crisis and project management skills, an ability to work effectively with a domestic and international Board of Directors, a commitment to diversity, impressive communication skills in sum, that elusive quality of making the sum of an organization greater than its parts. Cheerfulness, presence,' a sense of humor, flexibility, persuasion/negotiation skills and the capacity to have fun on the job are essential.

Job history and educational attainments are also important, but not as much as proven leadership, commitment to youth, and fund-raising accomplishments. A dedication to improving public health at the community level is desirable. Ability to speak Spanish important.

Competitive salary and excellent benefits.

Candidates will be subject to a thorough background check.

The Committee hopes to make an offer to the successful finalist by late 1997 or early next year.
