In August 1997, the International Center for Research on
Women and the Salzburg Seminar jointly organized an
intensive four-day session to study progress made worldwide
in advancing women’s leadership. A group of 53 women from 32
countries, comprising of ministers of governments,
parliamentarians, international banking, executives and
managers, heads of labor, heads of human rights and health
organizations, owners of national and multinational
businesses, judges, newspaper publishers, and scholars on
leadership, came to share their personal experiences,
research, and observations on the policies, institutional
mechanisms, and organizational structures that have
succeeded in promoting women into positions of leadership in
different settings.


This publication summarizes the discussion at the four-day
session and highlights the observations made by the
participants.
