I respect Malcolm's opinion, and his concern for persons, like myself, who are located in developing countries. In my country we laugh a lot, sometimes to conceal the pain of sustained underdevelopment by those who do not believe we can speak/decide for ourselves. I therefore not only enjoyed and contributed to the thread, but also found amazing the capacity of development specialists, around the globe, to find some commonality in humour.

Perhaps when fellos list members come to my country as consultants, they might find the work easier when they can lighten up and laugh with us. In that way, these overseas consultants might create an atmosphere in which the developed and the developing world can relate as collaborators (barriers lowered) and not as adversaries (barriers fixed/heightened). Unrelieved solemnity may signify to us that the consultant is too far removed from the situation and the people - and even him/herself - to be trusted.

I thank those who who shared their humorous comments and helped me (and my associates) to find some unexpected fun in our seven day-week of community development activities in a local environment of economic and social stress. I appreciate Malcolm's message regarding a return to the main business of DEVEL-L subscribers - just so long as he does not purport to speak for others (like myself)who have their own voices on this list.

I also hope that, with our attention (helpful or not!) to his concern, Dick Tinsley finds humane and effective methods of controlling those goats.

Towards a balance between work and play....
