The Sustainable Development Networking Programme, a networking/IT
project of the United Nations Development Programme, is seeking to
add an Information Systems specialist to its current staff.


The Job description is the following:


Overall Purpose


 Under the direct supervision of the SDNP Information Technology
 specialist,  the staff member will be responsible for  overall
 backstopping of SDNP operations with particular emphasis on Africa
 South of the Sahara regions and the information needs of SDNPs
 worldwide .


Functions:


1. The staff member will provide support to new and existing SDNP
sites with particular emphasis on the African continent. This will
involve considerable travel to discuss SDNP opportunities,
consultations with other agencies (both within the UN system and
others), and other divisions within UNDP.   The staff member is expected to:


 - familiarise him/herself with ongoing prefeasibility and feasibility
 studies for the establishment of national SDNPs and review their
 progress;


 - discuss and evaluate project documents presented to SDNP NY by
 national counterparts;


 - monitor project implementation and  project evaluations;


 - discuss and evaluate information needs for SDNP sites, including
 the development of  "information products" for operational SDNPs in
 the context of long-term sustainability.


2. The staff member will assume responsibility for information
outreach.  This will entail developing policies, managing the
preparation, and distribution and storage of SDNP information
materials.


3. The staff member will research information or meta-information
sources that might be relevant to existing SDNP sites , either
providing information or connecting SDNP nodes or users with sources.


4. The staff member will undertake other assignments at the request of
the Director of SDNP or the Information Technolgy Specialist.




Qualifications


- Advanced degree (MA or Ph D.) in a subject directly relevant to sustainable
development/information systems;
 - Advanced training and experience in information systems, information
technologies and/or information management;
 - Proficient in office automation tools.; advanced knowledge of
Internet; knowledge and hands on experience in designing and
implementing  information systems in developing countries with
emphasis on information exhange and dissemination for developmental
purposes;
 - Excellent Knowledge of  French  in addition to English;
- An African developing country nationality.
