Hello everyone:Kindly allow me to announce a new class on the web.
INTERESTED IN OTHER CULTURES?
Starting October 15, 1996, the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth's Distance Learning Program (CyberEd) will offer the following course taught on the World Wide Web: "IMPROVING YOUR INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS." This non-credit course goes for 7 weeks plus an introductory week at a cost of $135. This course requires full access to the Internet and students will be expected to share work and ideas with the instructor and fellow classmates. This is not self-instruction. CyberEd uses real human interaction as the foundation on which learning takes place. Deadline for sign-up is October 16. To avoid late registration fees, payment must be received by October 9, 1996.
Course objectives: 1) Raise your awareness of what culture is; 2) Familiarize you with various theories of intercultural communication; 3) Increase your understanding of how culture influences communication; 4) Increase your awareness of your own culturally-conditioned behavior patterns, values, and attitudes; 5) Increase your ability to identify barriers to effective intercultural communication; 6) Give you practice in applying your new knowledge in an intercultural context, with a view toward making communication more effective; 7) Develop a repertoire of skills for you to use in communicating with people who were raised in a different culture; and 8) Help you to increase positive attitudes toward (and reduce stereotyping of) people of other cultures.
