Dear friends, I've been folowing this issue of participation for its part of the core of my dissertation. Research on organizations has shown that there are only two fundamental organizational structures, namely, Bureaucracy and Participative Democracy. Bureaucracy, also known as First Design Principle or DP1, is characterized by redundancy of parts and several negative psychologiacl effects on human behavior as most, if not all, of you must be have experienced, and where it is counter to the individual interest to cooperate . Participative Democracy, also known as Second Design Principle,or DP2, on the other hand, is characterized by redundancy of functions where cooperation is the only viable way to accomplish anything.

For those of you interested in these type of structures see the work by Fred and Merrelyn Merrelyn.

Best regards,
