Ah, now there's a can of worms...

I guess the question is, "whose standards"?

A Eurocentric breakdown could be:

Regions: 7 continents (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, north America and South America).

Sub-regions: "independent" countries.

Of course, you could also divide the world by religion, environment, income, language, "race", etc, etc.
