11Sep96 EU: EU/NGO - FIRST DIRECTORY OF EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENT NGOS IS PUBLISHED BY FOUR INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS. Brussels, 10/09/1996 (Agence Europe) - The first volume of the bilingual directory of non-governmental organizations active in the field of sustainable development, limited to European NGOs, has just been released. Available in paper form and on CD-ROM, it is the result of cooperation by four international organizations, the OECD, UN, North/South Centre of the Council of Europe, and the Development NGO Liaison Committee for the EU (with support from the European Commission). The organizations pooled their data bases, thus creating a "politically unique project", commented Mr Henny Helmich of the OECD Development Centre. Published for NGOs in the southern hemisphere, the press, governments and embassies of ACP countries, Community institutions and Union delegations in developing countries, the bilingual (French/English) and voluminous (765 pages) directory lists over 3,900 NGOs in 26 European countries, profiles NGOs in terms of country, provides an index of sustainable development activities in terms of subject and region, an index of information and education activities by subject and a list of NGO abbreviations and acronyms. "The idea for this work originated in the observation that information on individual NGOs was lacking. This intelligent directory reflects the constant increase in the number of NGOs and the diversification of their intervention profiles. It will make it possible to respond to the deluge of requests emanating from NGOs in developing countries seeking partners in Europe", declared Mr Bernard Ryelandt of the Commission's Directorate-General for Development. The second volume, covering development NGOs in non-European OECD countries, will be published in late 1997.
