I initially posted the following announcement to ENTER-L members mailto:(ENTER-L@DEVCAN.CA) but I think it should interest DEVEL-L members as well************************************************************************* GLOBAL LINKS CONSULTATION "MAKING - Community Economic Development - GLOBAL!"
************************************************************************** We are hosting an international consultation of individuals involved in 'Community Economic Development' (CED). This consultation will explore how community based enterprise can jointly enhance income-generating initiatives across national borders, and thus function effectively in the so-called 'new global economy!' The focus of the consultation will be on practical options for global collaboration, such as: partnerships, trade (import-export), collaboarative marketing, and joint-ventures.
The consultation is being conducted via the post, electronic mail and at a workshop to be held in Ottawa, November 27/28, 1996. The workshop will bring together representatives of organizations working within CED to share information and discuss how community based enterprise can concretely cooperate internationally.
This initiative will end with the production of a working document (such as a manual, resource kit, etc.) for initiating global CED ventures. Discussion papers, workshop proceeding, technical requirements plus practical guidelines will be included in this document that will be available by year end.
West End Community Ventures (WECV), a local CED corporation in Ottawa, Canada, is sponsoring the consultation. We have financial and logistical support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and we are appealing to others for specific additional funding.
Purpose/Intentions
The objectives of the consultation are to: 1. identify tangible ways of creating productive joint relations between community based groups across national borders, 2. build ongoing supportive relationships between participants for future mutually beneficial ventures, and 3. develop a common understanding of the potential opportunities and risks for community based groups, in the so-called 'new global economy'.
