The Least of These
Program Highlights
HCJB
September 29, 1997

We start by focusing on three locations in the world which are facing drought and famine. Allen Graham reports on food shortages in Ethiopia, and efforts underway there. Then, Curt Cole tells us how El Nino has contributed to the smoke and haze problem in southeast Asia, and how that in turn is inhibiting relief work which is helping a famine situation in New Guinea. Finally, we hear about growing concern due to drought and possible food shortages in Nicaragua. Next, we will turn to a special report from Dawn Johnston-Pitt on how a group of women scientists from Asia and the Pacific recently explored how the needs of low-income women can be met through better education and more emphasis on science and technology that meets the needs of the people. Finally, we will talk with Dr. Clive Calver, the newly elected President of World Relief. Mr. Calver talks about raising consciousness about human needs, the motivation of Christian agencies in working with the needy, and gives meaningful insight into the relationship between evangelism and Christian development work. The Least of These is a weekly radio program produced by HCJB, The Voice of the Andes in Quito, Ecuador, South America. The title of the program comes from the biblical reference in Matthew 25:40 where Jesus Christ said, "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to me. Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
