Just as a general reply, I just returned from the AIIM show in San Fransisco
where I saw a scanner that is designed to do large, grey scale transparent
images.  It will do up to 12 bits of grey scale (4096 levels).  The resolution
is adjustable.  The image they were using for a demo, was an X-RAY that
was about 14"x17".  The scanner and driver software (no application) sells
for $16,000 US.  If you would like any more info, let me know & I'll post
it here.
