I highly recommend that you seek out Jeff Rothenberg's article
entitled "Ensuring the Longevity of Digital Documents" in the January
1995 issue of the Scientific American.  The article is excellent, and
it also contains a useful bibliography for further reading.
A chart in his article suggests that the optical disk has a physical
life of 30 years, but a "time until obsolete" of only 10 years.
