[NOTE: I'm sending this to a few lists. Sorry for any duplication.]

Dear friends -- I hope my questions to you this morning don't sound like I've not been listening to conversations on this list. However, the information I'm seeking, I think, takes on a slightly different twist than what I've seen. Anyway, here are my questions:

How are you using digital images in your school? -- in the classroom? -- image reserves? -- student projects? -- faculty courseware? -- other?

How many courses are using digital images in some form or another? (-- your best guess would be enough)

Are the digital images on a closed or open network? -- on a web page? -- on a custom-made Photo-CD or CD-ROM? -- large hard drive? -- other?

Are the images accessible from off campus?

Do you have special network security in place to protect these images from possible misuse?

If you have made digital images from illustrations in books to support a course, do you discard the images after they have served their purpose for the course, or do you keep them for future use?

How many digital images do you have? -- made in house? -- purchased from vendors?

How are you dealing with copyright issues? -- calling it 'fair use'? -- working under school guidelines? -- using only licensed images? -- don't know?

Barbara Hoffman and I, as co-chairs of the CAA's Intellectual Property Rights Committee, need this info as Barbara continues her valient efforts on our behalf at the CONFU meetings in Washington. So far it's been a rough road -- too many of the participants seem to be oblivious (or maybe in denial) to the realities of education in the arts and humanities. We need to get a sense of what we know is a groundswell in the use of digital images (along with slides, of course) in curriculum-based programs. We will not include names of institutions -- I guarantee this -- in any of our discussions, so please do not hesitate to disclose information.

If you have questions about my questions, please do not hesitate to contact me: mailto:csundt@oregon.uoregon.edu; phone: 541-346-2209; FAX: 541-346-2205.

Many thanks for your time and effort.
