Last night I read Howard Besser and Jennifer Trant's book, _Introduction to Imaging: issues in constructing an image database_. (Santa Monica, CA: The Getty Art History Information Program, c. 1995.) It's a short book - only 48 pages - and serves as a pretty useful introduction for people getting into imaging. Most of the sections are only 1-2 pages long and many are nicely illustrated. There's a glossary of terms at the end that was pulled from two resources: Moore's _Glossary of Electronic Document Processing and a Glossary put together under Mimi King's director for ALA's LITA division. The book is geared toward beginners and I will be passing it along to colleagues and library school students who are interested in imaging but don't understand the basics. Here's what the authors say in the intro about who they've targeted it for. "_Introduction to Imaging_ is designed to help curators, librarians, collection managers, administrators, scholars, and students understand the basic technology and processes involved in creating an image database depicting works typically found in museums. It also identifies the issues that arise in this process and outlines the points at which choices must be made."
Contents: What is a Digital Image?; Image Capture; Compression; Various Users, Various Uses; Documentation; Access; Selecting Scanners; Images--Digital Image, Print vs. Monitor Display, Resolution, Dynamic Range, Compression, Image Source; Image Quality; Quality Control; Display Devices; The Working Environment; Displaying Images and Text; Networks; Security Policy and Procedures; Technical Standards; Research Agenda; Other Resources; Conclusion; Glossary; Bibliography.
The book's content is similar to a workshop I took from Howard Besser a couple years ago. It was an excellent ½ day workshop covering an overview of the technicalities while still making us quite aware of important issues. You should be able to order a copy of the book from Getty AHIP, 401 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1100, Santa Monica, CA 90401-1455. Sorry I don't know what it costs. It's printed on high quality paper and contains many color illustrations so it could be in the $40 range. A good library acquisition! ;>)
Regards, Stuart
