 Hello Jennifer

We hold many CDROM's in our art library. The ones that are most used, including databases, are mounted on two Pioneer stacks which hold 6 each. One is PC based and the other Mac. These are kept locked.

The CDROMs most heavily used could be classified as electronic art / animation such as "totally GORGEOUS" (Film Australia) and "The Resident's Freak Show" by Voyager. It depends upon the courses that are being taught. We would purchase them with the same criteria we would use for monographs. At the moment we have almost completed our Collection Development and Resources Access Policy which addresses issues like this. Like art monographs, CDROMs vary from being of the coffee table variety, to the popular, to the more serious and probably the best use of the medium - experimental interactive art.

The CDROM's are catalogued, but in addition a separate list has been prepared to publicize their existence. CDROM's are allowed out on loan on the same basis as slides - for teaching purposes, two weeks, for student seminars, one day. They are held behind the loans desk where users borrow them and use them on the Mac or PC, whichever format is applicable. The format required and any additional software requirements are noted on the catalogue record and on the CDROM.

We don't network CDROMs ourselves but are on the ANU Library's CDROM network. Networking requires special skills which we don't have. It is interesting that the ANU Library is moving away from the CDROM network and towards databases mounted on a hard disk (Liberator).

Cheers

Joye
